Project ECHO for Public Health

About Project ECHO for Public Health

Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a movement to demonopolize knowledge and amplify workforce capacity to provide best practice care for underserved people. Originally designed for medical providers, the ECHO model is a peer-learning training modality that uses a combination of multi-point video-conferencing, case studies, best practice promotion, and outcome monitoring to create and support professional communities of learning and practice.

NNPHI and its National Coordinating Center for Public Health Trainings (NCCPHT) became an ECHO Replication Partner in early 2019 and then became an ECHO Superhub in 2021. Superhubs are experienced ECHO partners authorized to provide training and technical assistance to new hubs. NCCPHT is leading efforts to translate the ECHO model for public health applications to address complex public health challenges with an innovative approach and an equity lens.

Our Work

As an ECHO Superhub site, NCCPHT has extensive technical knowledge on the ECHO model and offers capacity building support to partners and hubs. NCCPHT:

  • provides training and implementation technical assistance for partners to develop and host their own ECHO sessions.
  • supports peer collaboration and network building by introducing subject matter experts, connecting individuals and organizations with shared goals, and inviting ECHO participants to share their experiences.
  • leads a range of NNPHI-developed ECHO series on increasing capacity, resilience, and collaboration among the public health workforce.

Our Impact

NNPHI members and partners are leveraging the ECHO model across the United States, to offer accessible and high-quality content to communities regardless of geography or available resources. Public health practitioners participating in ECHO sessions are able to incorporate knowledge and best practices into their work and communities.

NNPHI and its partners are leveraging the ECHO model to address a variety of topics. The list below includes some of the Project ECHO for Public Health series led by NNPHI and member institutes:
