Hiring and training health department staff can be a daunting effort. Effective employee training is an essential step to an organization’s success and the retention of all employees. This is even more important when orienting new employees. New staff need to receive quality training to carry out responsibilities and build a firm foundation to ensure a successful work experience with the organization. Quality improvement principles can be powerful guiding steps in developing and improving workforce development programing, including new employee orientation. In this webinar, we will explore a local health department’s journey in improving and implementing a new employee orientation program that involves all levels of the department. Elements of the program that were developed will be shared including training plans, resources, checklists, and training modules. Finally, we will learn how these efforts helped the organization successfully maintain PHAB accreditation.

  1. Describe the steps Columbus Public Health’s Office of Workforce Development took to improve an existing new employee orientation program.
  2. Identify at least two staff roles that are involved in training new health department staff.
  3. Identify how the New Employee Orientation Program contributed to Columbus Public Health’s ongoing accreditation.

About the Presenter

Beth Ransopher, RS, MEP
Ms. Ransopher is the Workforce Development Manager for Columbus Public Health (CPH) in Columbus, OH. She has over 28 years of experience working for local public health departments in workforce development, emergency preparedness and environmental health. She worked for the Delaware General Health District (OH) for thirteen years. She joined Columbus Public Health in 2002 as the Workforce Development Coordinator in the Office of Emergency Preparedness. She was promoted to Workforce Development Manager in the Office of Human Resources to manage workforce activities for the entire department. She is responsible for the department’s Workforce Development Plan, managing two learning management systems, coordinating training programs and completing public health accreditation documentation for Domain 8. Ms. Ransopher is a trained PHAB Site Visitor and represents NACCHO on the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice committee.
